Water mill

El Molino

Here you have a water mill, centuries-old witnesses of the history and tradition of the region. These ingenious devices harnessed the power of water to grind cereals and generate energy.

These mills were an integral part of Asturian rural life for many years. Discover old mills in another route where, if the weather is hot, you can bathe in a waterfall. Are you up for it?

Chestnut

Los Castaños

One of the trees that most represent us Asturians are the chestnut trees. They are majestic trees that have been part of our landscape for many centuries. In autumn, Asturians love to organize “magüestos”, which is a party where we roast chestnuts and drink sweet cider. Sweet cider is like apple juice, but it is left to ferment a little, so it tastes much better. On this route you will also see oak and hazelnut trees, do you know how to identify them?

Birds

The Birds

Do you know which animals help us eliminate insect pests, pollinate our flowers and disperse the seeds our plants and trees need to grow? And what’s more, we love them. If you go quietly, along this route you will see robins, blackbirds, wagtails, greenfinches, pine grosbeaks and many more. Remember that you are in their home and that we have to respect them. Have you seen any of them, which ones have you seen?

Praos de siega and Gamonéu Cheese

Mowing meadows

In these meadows you might be lucky and see some of the typical cows of our town, which are the casinas. If not, you can also see vaques roxes, oveyes xaldes, or pites pintes. Every year, around April, there are ranchers who bring their cattle up from this valley to “el puertu”, where they will stay until after the summer. There is something that characterizes our town, and that is cheese. The gamoneu is highly valued, it is made with milk from cows, sheep and goats that graze freely in our valleys and mountains, so it is very healthy. That’s why the children of Benia grow up so healthy and strong. And you, do you like gamoneu cheese?

Hórreos

The granaries

And this construction is the typical Asturian granary, they are like little houses for our food. We raise them on these pillars so that the food is protected from humidity and animals. You will find them in almost every Asturian village. They are a symbol for us. What would you like to enter one?
